Outreach
TUC is an outreach-oriented church and a congregation of outreach-oriented people. For example, one of our former members started a microcredit foundation in the Philippines during his time at our church long before Grameen Bank in Bangladesh became famous. Ten percent of the TUC annual budget is allocated to support the outreach program. The Outreach Ministry prayerfully provides, in the name of TUC, volunteers and financial support to organizations and projects of love, care, healing, education, social justice and service throughout the world. Along with regularly supporting more than 20 ministries globally, TUC responds financially to special needs through three Special Offerings each year. Last year's Fall Special Offering went to Canadian Foodgrains Bank to help those suffering from the severe drought in East Africa. Our Christmas Special Offering was split between Kapitran to support their aid of migrant workers in the Tohoku region and TUC's own Mission for Our Homeless Neighbours (MOHN). This year's Easter Special Offering was used to support our partner churches in Tohoku who have suffered due to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
Outreach also provides channels for TUC members to respond to emergency relief needs that arise in Japan and elsewhere. These offerings are used to buy supplies for the afflicted areas or are donated to agencies that are active on the spot and can reach out to the victims more effectively than TUC’s own efforts could. Following devastating storms of last December in Mindano, Philippines, a special offering was collected and given to the National Council of Churches in the Philippines to aid them with their relief efforts.
These and other needs will continue. The TUC Tohoku Ministry outlined on the next page is another example. The needs call for personal, hands-on participation by our entire church community, now and for years to come. Please feel free to contact any Outreach Ministry Team member to offer your time, talents and financial resources to TUC’s outreach ministries. Our team is coordinated by Mary Fish (marypkfish@gmail.com), Elder, and its members are Akiko Adachi, Paul Fukuda, Wally Higgins, Dima Kato, Noriko Sakoh, Yukiko Ogata, Yuka Shigeno, Takeshi Shimizu, Pepper Delrosario, Naoko Taniguchi and Juan Zheng.
